What You'll Learn

Baton authority, in one day.

Four BSIS-required topic areas covering legal authority, technique, retention, and reporting. Practical drills are part of the in-person session.

Legal Use of Force
When a security guard may legally deploy a baton in California, the standards under Penal Code, and the post-incident reporting required.
Deployment & Technique
Approved baton types, deployment from rest, defensive striking, joint manipulation, and de-escalation tactics that keep you legally clean.
Retention & Safety
Carrying, storing, and protecting your baton on duty. Weapons-retention drills so you don't lose control of the tool you're authorized to carry.
Defensive Tactics
When NOT to deploy. Verbal de-escalation, body positioning, distance management, and the path back to non-physical resolution.
Incident Reporting
How to write a baton-deployment report that stands up to BSIS audit, employer review, and (if it ever comes to it) a courtroom.
Issued Permit Certificate
A serialized completion certificate, employer-verifiable, ready to attach to your BSIS Baton Permit application.

Baton FAQ

Common questions about baton authority.

Do I need a baton permit to carry one on duty?
Yes. California requires a BSIS Baton Permit to carry a baton on duty as a security guard. Operating without one is a violation of the California Business & Professions Code.
How often do I need to renew?
Baton permits are issued for 2 years in California, on the same cycle as your guard card. We'll remind you 60 days before expiry.
What kind of baton can I carry?
California permits straight, side-handle, and expandable batons (with employer authorization). Specifically prohibited: spring batons, weighted-tip batons, and any concealed/disguised baton. We cover the approved-list during training.
Can I take the baton home?
Yes — your BSIS Baton Permit authorizes possession beyond on-duty time, but transport rules apply (Penal Code 22210). The course covers exactly when and how.
